Preserving Victorian Engineering Heritage
Commissioned by St William Homes LLP, this landmark regeneration project is transforming the former Bethnal Green Gasworks beside Regent’s Canal into a vibrant residential and public realm development. At its heart are two historic gasholder guide frames, Gasholder No. 2 (1866) and Gasholder No. 5 (1889), retained as striking heritage features.
Craddys provided structural engineering services from early feasibility through to refurbishment delivery. Our scope included condition inspections, structural assessments, and development of repair strategies for both off-site and in-situ works.
The project posed significant challenges: GH2 required full dismantling and re-erection following specialist refurbishment, while GH5 demanded safe scaffold encapsulation for in-situ repairs to its 44 m-high lattice frames. Craddys devised complex temporary works solutions and offered real-time site support throughout.
Our heritage-sensitive engineering approach ensured the long-term preservation and seamless integration of these iconic Victorian structures within the wider redevelopment.
