About the project

Conservation Engineering for Large‑Scale Ironwork Repairs

This heritage project involves the restoration of approximately 30,000 cast and wrought iron components, each averaging around 1 m², spanning both structural and non‑structural elements of a nationally significant roof structure. The works form part of a long‑term conservation programme at a World Heritage Site, where collaborative working and sensitive repair methodology are central to the project ethos.

Craddys were appointed to provide specialist structural engineering advice, temporary works design, and detailed repair specifications for the extensive wrought and cast iron roof structure. Our role includes assessing historic iron components, defining appropriate strengthening and repair techniques, and developing temporary works solutions to enable safe access and careful handling of fragile heritage elements.

Key challenges include managing the scale and variability of thousands of individual components, ensuring repairs are sympathetic to original materials, and coordinating closely with conservation specialists to maintain heritage integrity. Craddys’ continued involvement supports a robust, collaborative approach that will guide both the current and next phases of this complex restoration programme.
