Specialist Conservation Engineering for a Grade I Listed Structure
This five‑year programme involved the refurbishment of a Grade I listed 1860s train shed constructed from wrought and cast iron—one of the most significant surviving examples of Victorian railway architecture. The project sought to conserve the historic structure while ensuring its continued performance for modern operational demands.
Craddys were appointed as structural engineers throughout restoration works, providing detailed structural assessment and on‑site investigations to understand the condition and behaviour of the early ironwork. Our role included the development of strengthening strategies, detailed design of structural interventions, and preparation of technical specifications tailored to the sensitive conservation requirements of the listed train shed.
Key challenges included working within a very constrained environment, accommodating the unique material characteristics of historic iron construction, and designing sympathetic strengthening measures that preserved the original architectural form. Craddys’ long‑term involvement was central to delivering a coordinated, conservation‑led approach that secured the future of this landmark Victorian structure.
