Specialist Structural Alterations to a Grade I Listed Landmark
As part of the wider redevelopment of St Pancras Station, this project involved significant structural alterations within the basement of the Grade I listed St Pancras Chambers to create new connectivity between the restored mainline station and the London Underground station below. The works required sensitive intervention within one of London’s most historically significant Victorian buildings.
Craddys were appointed to deliver the detailed structural design, including all temporary works to open out the basement structure to provide the new pedestrian link. Our role encompassed developing engineering solutions to remove existing structural elements, form new openings, and reconfigure load paths while minimising deflections and building movements, preserving the historic fabric and maintaining stability throughout construction.
Key challenges included working within the exceptionally constrained basement space, with limited access, coordinating and integrating the temporary works with the new structural support to minimise settlements. Craddys’ careful, conservation‑led engineering approach enabled the successful adaptation of this landmark structure to accommodate modern passenger movements.
