A new Aldi store located on a piece of wasteland at a very high-profile site, right next to the seafront and holiday park in the centre of Porthcawl. Bridgend County Borough Council were very keen for the development to become a statement piece in this prominent location, and consequently, the planning authorities demanded numerous features not typically included on a standard Aldi store. These included an S-shaped roof with a wavy edge profile, timber and stone cladding, and timber clad external feature columns.
The site comprised a considerable depth of blown sand with a historic dock wall in one corner, requiring a piled foundation solution that cantilevered over the wall. The steel frame also required a non-standard approach to form the final shape of the roof profile and the detailing of both the roof and lower canopy edge.
Also included within the site boundary was a public realm area with bespoke designed timber benches and sympathetic landscaping, as well as a new access road from the adjacent roundabout. Beyond the site boundary, numerous highway improvements were made, including additional pedestrian crossing points, light-controlled crossings, and safe, accessible pedestrian access routes to the store.
