A complex two-storey Aldi store with below-retail car parking
Craddys were responsible for the civil and structural engineering design of this complex, two-storey Aldi store in Caterham. The scheme included a suspended 1st floor retail space above a covered area of car parking, with direct access from the main road.
The project involved working around a congested and often unpredictable existing site, including co-ordination of works around an existing network rail retaining wall asset and various existing ground hazards.
We were involved from the early feasibility stages right through to project practical completion. Particular bespoke engineering challenges involved the detailing and design of a transfer truss structure over the car park opening, large long span floor beams supporting high floor loads and new escalator support structures for access between the entrance and retail spaces.
