Restoring a World‑Record Victorian Structure
As part of the Oval and Kennington Development Area, this project focused on the refurbishment and re‑erection of a Grade II listed wrought‑iron gasholder located adjacent to The Oval cricket ground. Constructed in 1892, the 65m‑diameter guide frame was the largest gasholder of its kind in the world and is positioned above a 13m‑deep historic water tank.
Craddys were appointed to develop the structural refurbishment strategy for the dismantling, specialist repair, and re‑erection of the gasholder frame. Our role included condition assessment of the historic ironwork, defining repair methodologies, and developing engineering solutions to safely retain the structure within the wider regeneration scheme.
Key challenges included the desire to refurbish the structure in situ, alongside significant environmental constraints. Craddys’ experience and reputation in the field, combined with their heritage‑led engineering approach, helped to secure listed building consent and planning approval for the scheme.
