Specialist Engineering Support for a Landmark Restoration
The five‑year conservation programme for the Elizabeth Tower represented the most extensive repair and refurbishment project in the building’s history. The scheme involved restoring the external fabric, upgrading ageing services, and improving access through installation of a new lift, all while preserving as much historic material as possible. Extensive off‑site restoration was undertaken by specialist contractors, with stonework, metalwork and decorative elements sensitively repaired or replaced to conserve the Tower’s iconic character.
Craddys were appointed to support the repair and refurbishment works with specialist temporary works engineering associated with teh repair and restoration of the wrought iron and cast iron structural and non-structural element. Our role included the design of temporary works systems required to facilitate safe access and repair of the bell frame and associated internal structures. We also provided regular site attendance and ongoing engineering support throughout the programme, working closely with the wider conservation and contractor team.
Key challenges included working within a highly constrained, nationally significant Grade I listed structure, coordinating temporary works around complex heritage features, and ensuring the highest levels of workmanship and safety. Craddys’ contribution formed a critical part of the successful delivery of this landmark restoration.
