Innovative Temporary Works for Historic Iron Structures

This heritage project involved the dismantling, refurbishment, and re‑erection of a 19th‑century, Grade II listed gasholder comprising cast‑iron columns and wrought‑iron beams. The works required careful handling, transportation, storage, and reinstatement of historic ironwork to secure the structure’s long‑term future (the first refurbishment of its kind in the UK).

Craddys were also appointed by the contractor, BAM, to develop the temporary works strategy for the dismantling and re‑erection of the guide frame. Our role included the design of specialist lifting and erection frames to safely rotate and support cast‑iron columns that lacked capacity to act as cantilevers, as well as providing detailed engineering input during installation.

Key challenges included managing fragile historic elements, complex lifting sequences, and strict heritage constraints. Craddys also undertook structural assessment of the guide frame and designed all repair and refurbishment works, working closely with Historic England to deliver a sympathetic and robust conservation‑led solution.
