In June, Craddys hosted eight work experience students at various stages of schooling to complete intensive one-week courses on Civil and Structural Engineering. These were lead by the team of graduates from our Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff offices and overseen by Project Engineer Tom Minett.
As with every successful project, the students started the week off with a ‘site-visit’, touring the various structures of our local area Pill, including the recently completed fire tower designed by our very own Joe Kendall. After completing the subsequent site-appraisal, the students continued their learning by designing an extension to our Pill office and sizing key elements.
Principles of sustainable design were driving factors behind designer decisions, supported by an embodied carbon calculation to determine the impact of their material choices. Civils work was also incorporated in the form of a hands-on demonstration, using footballs and a theodolite to develop a levels strategy and determine low points of the fields of Pill!
The week finally ended with testing the students practical design skills by constructing buildings using skewers and marshmallows; unsurprisingly the highlight of their weeks!
It has been a great pleasure hosting these experience weeks and we look forward to inspiring many more students in the years to come.
