Located in South East Asia, Craddys have been involved with the forensic investigation, repair specification and subsequent design of refurbishment works to a specialist scientific containment facility used in the research of tropical diseases. Initial works required a detailed on-site investigation in to a series of existing concrete framed buildings to better understand their condition, structural defects and future maintenance risks. Following this, Craddys will assist with repair and refurbishment works to ensure future longevity of this scientific research facility.

Part refurbishment, part new build extension this SAPO4/ACDP3 containment project was a true engineering challenge. Featuring intricate detailing and detailed coordination (using the common BIM environment) across a multi-disciplinary team, Craddys were involved with client and stakeholder liaison, risk workshops, hazard studies (HAZOP), contained drainage, pressure testing, effluent treatment facilities, reinforced concrete detailing for contained structures and service integration.

Craddys have significant experience working on Science, research and healthcare schemes at Southmead Hospital. Notably the Pathology building, which included laboratory areas, clean rooms and research study areas, was a highly serviced structure with critical attention to detail and integration of design disciplines. Craddys operated for the Client pre-construction, developing packages for D&B tender. This CL2 laboratory building (which also housed a CL3 suite) included cellular pathology and microbiology laboratories, along with staff facilities and administration offices.

Craddys undertook the civil and structural design of a new 4 storey reinforced concrete frame for the North Bristol NHS Trust. The structure was to provide an extension to the existing Phase 1 of the Learning and Research (L&R) building at Southmead Hospital. Initial plans called for the building to be mixed use, split between laboratories, offices and workspaces, as well as a café/communal area. Assessment of dynamic loads and sensitivity to vibration was of the highest importance.

A highly serviced and complex state of the art part steel, part concrete framed clean-room manufacturing and science facility. The building comprised a three story office area, a large RC basement with suspended flat slab over, a clean room and associated production, manufacturing and testing area. The building was highly serviced and integration of M+E facilities including bespoke structural arrangements into the overall structural design was a key task.
