Modern Education Facility on a Live School Campus
Commissioned jointly by Bouygues and the Department for Education, this £10–15m project delivered a new school building at an operational secondary school. The scheme involved constructing a modern teaching block on a constrained live campus, followed by demolition of the existing 1960s multi-storey building and completion of associated landscaping and external works. The new facility was successfully handed over in December 2020 and fully integrated into the functioning school environment.
Craddys were appointed from ITT stage and provided full civil and structural engineering design through all RIBA stages, leading the structural elements of the scheme. Working collaboratively with Bouygues and the wider design team, Craddys developed an alternative design to the DfE baseline proposal, achieving significant programme and cost benefits while maintaining compliance with DfE performance standards.
Our team delivered detailed civil and structural design to BIM Level 2, coordinating regular model exchanges, clash detection workshops and ongoing construction-stage support. Craddys also provided a suite of temporary works designs, including shuttering for reinforced concrete elements, crane pad assessments, working platform design, hoarding checks and foundations for site cabins, ensuring safe and efficient delivery.
