Designing Robust Infrastructure for Rail Operations
This major rail infrastructure project involves the construction of a new train maintenance depot, currently on site, designed to support modern servicing and operational requirements. The facility comprises large-span steel-framed buildings housing multiple overhead travelling cranes integrated into the primary structural system.
Craddys were appointed to deliver full civil and structural engineering design services for the scheme, alongside fulfilling the role of Principal Designer. The buildings are formed using steel portal frames supported on a grillage of piles and reinforced concrete ground beams, providing robust foundations suited to heavy operational loading.
Key challenges included coordinating crane load paths within the primary steel frame and ensuring buildability of the structure while works progressed on site. Craddys’ combined engineering and design leadership role ensured a coordinated, safe, and efficient solution tailored to the demands of a complex rail maintenance environment.
