Craddys undertook the civil and structural engineering design for Cossham Hospital’s new extension, completed in 2023. The extension houses MRI and CT scanners, replacing a long-used temporary trailer.
The project faced several complexities, including proximity to the original listed hospital and challenging ground conditions with potential shallow coal workings. A reinforced concrete basement was constructed, serving as a raft foundation to span potential soft spots and providing a low-resonance structure for the equipment above.
Careful coordination with specialist equipment suppliers ensured proper placement of Faraday cages and metallic zones, avoiding obstructions. The result is a robust, well-designed facility set to serve the NHS for many years to come.
