Modern, Operationally Resilient Facility for Avon Fire & Rescue Service
Commissioned by Avon Fire & Rescue Service, this £4m redevelopment replaced the former Avonmouth Fire Station with a modern, fully equipped facility to support frontline emergency operations. The new building provides five double-depth appliance bays, office and accommodation spaces, training and skills facilities, a lecture theatre, and upgraded external service areas. The project was essential to enhance response capability and provide a fit-for-purpose base for the local fire service.
Craddys were appointed to deliver full civil and structural engineering services across all RIBA stages. The team developed coordinated designs for the superstructure, foundations, external works and a comprehensive below-ground drainage network, supporting a balanced civils and structures scope throughout.
The brownfield site and its proximity to a tidal discharge zone introduced stringent planning constraints, requiring careful coordination and robust technical solutions. Maintaining operational continuity during the phased construction added further complexity. Craddys’ SuDS-compliant stormwater design, including geocellular storage and phased drainage provision, ensured the facility remained functional throughout. The project completed in August 2022, receiving excellent end-user feedback.
