Contemporary Residential and Commercial Development in Stokes Croft
Commissioned by PG Group, this development comprises 143 apartments and 14 commercial spaces, including a new marketplace designed to enhance the neighbourhood’s independent spirit. Situated in the heart of vibrant Stokes Croft, the project transforms the area with a mix of contemporary residential living and community-focused commercial spaces.
Craddys were appointed across all RIBA stages to provide a structures-led service for the development, which consists of five blocks ranging from four to seven storeys. Three of the blocks were constructed with braced steel frames, precast concrete floor slabs, and Slimflor beams to accelerate construction, while the remaining two blocks used predominantly traditional construction, incorporating concrete transfer decks where required to maximise building heights.
A key challenge of the project was the temporary support and retention of the Grade II* listed Bath stone façade of the old Carriageworks building (constructed in 1862). This historic frontage was successfully incorporated into the permanent development using Cintec anchors and steel bracketry to ensure lateral support. Craddys’ careful structural design and innovative solutions enabled the integration of modern construction with heritage features, ensuring both stability and architectural integrity throughout the development.
